What exactly happens at an event?

Each of our curated experiences is multi-layered, hands-on, and designed to be engaging, challenging, and genuinely surprising. No two experiences are the same.

We believe that children — and adults — learn best when they're doing something that feels remarkable. So we don't lecture. We teach and provide experiences. We design, we build, we taste, we grow, we investigate, we create; and woven throughout every experience are the stories of extraordinary people from African-American history — inventors, artists, scientists, spies, farmers, and visionaries — who shaped the world and deserve to be known.

Why they called "experiences" and not classes?

The reason is because a "class" doesn't capture it. These are meticulously crafted adventures with multiple dimensions, activities, and layers of discovery. They are community events. They are moments. Check out some past experiences: Rhapsody in Bloom, Ain't MisBEEhavin', Oh Sew Beautiful, Don't Spill the Tea Sis, and I Can't Take My Spies Off Of You — and you'll begin to understand why "class" simply won't do.

Who can participate?

Young people ages 8–15 have always been our core. Now we're formally welcoming the multigenerational community that surrounds them — parents, grandparents, aunts, mentors, and community members who want to learn, connect, and be inspired alongside the young people they love. Select experiences will be designed specifically for cross-generational participation; others will remain youth-focused with family observation and engagement opportunities. Details vary by experience — check enrollment information for specifics.
