Our Philosophy
Business and society encourage us to “think outside the box”, but our educational system places us in one.
What do we mean by that? Children begin their educational journey by learning necessary and fundamental subjects (math, science, social studies, etc…); but as they continue their academic progression, their educational exposure becomes more and more narrowly focused and specialized. Knowledge that’s directly related to ones career or profession becomes valued, above all else. Whether the decision is due to financial reality, program efficiency, personal desire or practicality; our current system would rarely encourage someone to get hands-on experience with animal husbandry, permaculture, fashion technology or mechanics if that person were studying to be a doctor, musician or a postman; no matter how interested they were in those subjects. We’re often deterred from exploring many different subjects and specific life experiences, unless there’s a pre-determined end goal or desired career-related result in mind.
What if…
you were encouraged to create, innovate, and solve problems by applying industry-agnostic, cross-disciplinary knowledge that you obtained organically? What if some quirky experience enabled you to make critical connections between and among concepts, ideas, theories, disciplines and industries? How is innovative, critical thinking encouraged within our society, when we have a narrow, linear and myopic view of education as it relates to the value of hands-on experience and the cross-exposure of ideas?
